Sedation Dentistry

We believe that comfort is a vital component in your positive, rewarding dental experience. Dr. Amstadt is a trained and certified sedation dentist, so he offers many types of anesthesia for your optimal comfort.

In addition to gentle local anesthetic injections, Dr. Amstadt can provide nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedatives, and oral conscious sedation, which is a combination of nitrous oxide and an oral sedative. Depending upon your unique needs and level of dental anxiety, Dr. Amstadt will recommend appropriate sedation.

With nitrous oxide, you’ll inhale a relaxing gas through a facemask. The effects of nitrous oxide subside almost immediately, so you can return to normal activity following your dental appointment.

An oral sedative can be taken prior to your visit, and during your procedure, you’ll feel relaxed and peaceful. Oral sedation subsides more slowly than nitrous oxide, so please plan to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.

Oral conscious sedation involves taking an oral sedative prior to your visit. Then, once you are in the dental chair, Dr. Amstadt will administer nitrous oxide. You’ll respond to instructions, yet you’ll feel completely relaxed physically and mentally. Some patients have no memory of their dental visit after oral conscious sedation. As with an oral sedative, you’ll need a driver to and from your appointment.

Patients who suffer with dental phobia, anxiety, or stress, as well as those who require lengthy visits in the dental chair, often benefit from oral conscious sedation. To learn more, give us a call!
